McCann, Hugh Gerrard (Jerry)

July 28, 1932 – April 10, 2010.

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Hugh Gerrard McCann (Jerry), Beloved Father and Grandfather. After a courageous battle with cancer he died in the loving arms of his family at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital on Saturday, April 10, 2010. He was born the eldest of 14 siblings in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Ellen and Joseph McCann. As a young man he worked for the Merchant Navy and in his mid 20’s he moved to Jersey, Channel Islands where he met and married Carol Morel and emigrated to Canada with her in 1966. He operated his own Driving School, Ezee-Drive, for a number of years and later worked for B.C. Transit until retirement. His greatest love was always for his family, his “best ever” job was taking care of his grandchildren. Jerry had a huge heart and was the teller of the most magical stories. A wonderful friend to so many, a lover of jazz, a great drummer, he loved flying his model planes at Fry’s Corner in Surrey, as a long time member of the Abby Hawks in Abbotsford and also at the Chilliwack flying field. He is survived by his beloved son Joseph and loving daughter-in-law Leanna, his beloved daughter Sarah and loving son-in-law Robert Sheffield, the love of his life Carol, his three grandchildren Keith, Megan and Serena, two step-grandchildren Keenan and Cameron and brothers Anthony, Alan, Arthur, Desmond and Liam, and sisters, Florence, Beatrice, Pauline, Yvonne, Iris, June, sister-in-law Patricia Morel and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother Maurice and baby sister Ethel. A special thank you to Dr. Brown, Linda, Rhea and all the nurses in the Palliative Care Ward for the care and support they gave to Jerry in his final days and to Dr. Winston, Dr. Galbraith and the caring staff of the Cancer Clinic. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.

A Memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, April 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Road in Abbotsford.
