Henry (Butch) Nick HOOCK

March 3, 2006

Henry (Butch) Nick, late of Abbotsford and second child of Nick and Helen (Friesen) Hoock, was born on the family farm in the North Otter area of Langley on March 3, 1943. Dyslexia, the mental condition hindering reading ability, was not identified until much later in life and made his school years very difficult. He dropped out of school at age 16 and worked at various manufacturing jobs and was a welder for years. Because of his disability, Henry was unable to advance his position in any field and the last 13, mostly jobless years, were difficult for him. Feelings of inadequacy and deafness in later years probably led him to avoid social, public and religious gatherings and prevented him from forming close personal relationships. Henry, after years of smoking and breathing welding fumes, was diagnosed with lung cancer in early January and it rapidly spread through his body. He was admitted to the MSA Hospital on March 3, 2006, his 63rd birthday, and the family thanks the staff for their loving care. March 9 he was moved to the Langley Hospice, where he died peacefully March 10 with family members at his side.

Our thanks to the compassionate staff at the hospice facility. Henry seemed at peace with his lot and now resides in God's Heavenly Kingdom, free from disabilities and pain. He will be missed by brother Art (Vicky) Hoock; sister Alice (Gordon) Schindel, sister Nancy Hoock, many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father in 1978 and mother in 2004.

No public memorial at Henry's request. Donations in his memory may be made to Learning Disabilities Assoc. of Canada or the Cancer Society.
