March 30, 1928 — May 1, 2005
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved husband, father, grandfather and friend. Helmut was born in Basserabia, Romania and, along with his family, immigrated to Canada at the age of one year. His family took up residence in Alberta and began farming. In 1942 the Schramms moved their belongings to Chilliwack where they bought a dairy farm, remaining there until his father’s retirement. In 1957 Helmut married his loving wife Frieda (Bohr), moving into a house Helmut built in Chilliwack. Because Helmut was so talented in many areas he took up many careers, first as a logger from 1945 until 1964, working some construction, and then as a truck driver for National Feeds for 12 years. It was during this time that Helmut and Frieda purchased a broiler/raspberry farm in East Chilliwack. Within a few years Helmut quit truck-driving to concentrate fully on custom farm work and working on his 13 acres as well as 8 leased acres at Cultus Lake. In 1991 Helmut and Frieda retired to a 5 acre hobby farm where they built their dream home. Not one to remain idle, he spent part of his time looking after the hedging cedar business, part of his time building custom furniture, repairing small machines and inventing a feed bin in his shop and most of his time enjoying family and his many coffee buddies at the Husky Restaurant. It was at this time that Helmut started to develop heart problems. After a lengthy battle with these problems as well as lymphoma, Helmut passed into the presence of his Lord at the age of 77 years.
Predeceased by his brother, Benny (1958), his mother, Bertha (1961) and his father Adolf (1989), Helmut will be fondly remembered and terribly missed by his wife Frieda of 48 years. In addition, he leaves behind his daughter Lorinda (Kelvin) Block, his son Bradley and his daughter Lynnet, as well as his grandchildren Jacia, Kayla, Daylan, and Brayson, his sister Ida Salary, brother Fred and many in-laws and nieces and nephews.
Helmut will always be remembered for his quick smile and many stories. “Night night, love”.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2005 at 3:00 pm at Central Heights Church, 1661 McCallum Road, Abbotsford. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army Memorial Fund.
