MIX, HELENA (Helen)

22 Feb., 1915 - 9 Sept., 2008

Helena, the oldest of 9 children, was born to Helena and Gerhard Warkentine in Oriechow, Russia (now part of Ukraine) on February 22, 1915. She passed away quietly after a short illness at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital on 9 September, 2008 at the age of 93.

Helena was predeceased by her parents Helena and Gerhard Warkentine, 3 sisters, Anne Warkentine, Elizabeth Giesbrecht, Maria Kyllo and one brother George Warkentine.

Lovingly survived by her husband of 61 years Emmanuel Mix, 3 sisters, Kate Stevenson of Edmonton, Martha Bridges of Sand Point, Idaho, Kathleen Warkentine of Calgary, Alberta and 1 brother, Jack Warkentine (Frieda) of Calgary, Alberta

Helen came to Canada with her family in November 1926, settling in Drumheller and later in Didsbury, Southern Alberta. On leaving home, she did house work in Drumheller then she moved to Calgary. There she met Emmanuel at the (Colonel Belcher) Hospital where she had found work and they were later married on July 18, 1947 in Westbourn Baptist Church, Calgary, Alberta.

They moved to Vancouver, B.C. on August 12, 1947. Helen worked at Woodward's store downtown Vancouver for 20 years until she retired in 1974. She was very involved in Ruth Morten Baptist Church with girls club, choir and decorating the pulpit area each Sunday with her home grown floral arrangements.

Helen and Tom moved to Clearbrook, B.C. in 1981 to live out their retirement years. They both did volunteer work at the Clearbrook Goldenage Society and Helen joined the ceramics class turning out wonderful plates and vases. They continued to be very active in the church until their health wavered.

Helen will be remembered for her love of God, her church, her husband, family and friends. She showed her love through her unwavering generosity and kindness and warm hospitality. Tea and sweets were always only a minute away. She doted on her nieces and nephews and we are the richer for her love towards us. We miss her dearly.

Internment was at Hazelwood Cemetery on 30 September with Rev. Don Merrett officiating.
