Gwendoline Joan DENCER

Gwen passed away on Monday February 13th, 2006 after a period of failing health. She was born in Croydon, Surrey, England on April 29, 1921.

She was predeceased by her parents Frederick and Elizabeth Barton, her husband Cliff, her son Steve and her brother Roy Barton.

Gwen is survived by her son Ray (Mary), her sister Doris Tee (in England), daughter-in-law Nicky, grandchildren: Karen (Rejean), Christine (Erin), Andrea (Nathan), Jackie (fiance Steve), Laura and Kimberley, great grandchildren, Raychel, Hayden, Jamie and Elise, sister-in-law Phyllis Hobin (Lower Sackville N.S.), many nieces, nephews and numerous friends in England and Canada.

Gwen came to Canada as a war bride after the second world war ended and landed at Pier 21 in Halifax with her son Ray. Many years were spent stationed with the Black Watch Battallion, in Halifax, N.S., Camp Aldershot, N.S., Camp Gagetown, N.B., and in Germany.

In 1969 Cliff retired from the army and they made their home in Croydon, England, where she resided until 1989 when she and her son Steve and his family decided to make Canada their home.

Gwen lived with Steve and his family in Sardis for 5 years and made numerous friends in the Chilliwack area. Her favourite pass time was to help at the Forester's bingo on Monday.

In 1995 she moved to Abbotsford to live with her son Ray and his family. She became a member of the Fraser Valley War Brides and for many years was still active with the Forester's Bingo and also the Rainbow Women's Society in Chilliwack. Gwen loved to knit and made sweaters and baby clothes for her family. She loved Bingo and until her health deteriorated, regularly attended bingo on a Saturday afternoon in Abbotsford.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 20, 2006 at 10:30 am at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home, 45865 Hocking Avenue, Chilliwack. Her cremated remains will be taken to England at a later date where she will be buried next to her husband Cliff.

Gwen's family would like to thank Dr. Bale, the paramedics, emergency room staff at MSA hospital, and the nurses on 2 West for the excellent, compassionate care they gave her, a special thanks to nurse Leoni on 2 West who made her short stay as comfortable as possible.

In lieu of flowers donations to The Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
