Gertie Elizabeth Verhoeven (nee: Melusik) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at Mission Memorial Hospital’s Extended Care Unit at the age of 66 years. Her brother Joe and sisters Annabell and Ruth predeceased Gertie. Gertie was born in Cranbrook, BC, was raised in Grand Forks, BC and then moved to Silverdale in 1958. She is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by her husband Cornelius, son Ernie, daughter Penny, son Tony, daughter-in-law Carrie, grandchildren Fraser, Chris and Jessica, and many extended family members and friends. Gertie was a long time member of the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary, as well as The Silverdale Community Hall. A tea will be held on Sunday, December 5, 2004 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Silverdale Community Hall in her memory for those who would like to attend. The Verhoeven family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the many nurses and care-aids that helped Gertie through her stay at the MMH ECU. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gertie’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice.
