Frieda Martens was born in Borden, SK on January 5, 1915 to Wm. W. and Katherine (Toews) Martens. She moved to Vernon, BC shortly after her 100th birthday from Abbotsford and passed away peacefully on August 27, 2017. She faced many challenges with tenacity and courage during her 102 years, 8 months of life. At 1½ she lost her mother, her formal education ended before completing Grade 8, she lived through the Depression along with 15 siblings, and her most profound loss was the sudden death of her beloved Herb, husband of only 22 years. Widowed at 46 she turned to her faith in God, her church, her family and friends. Her strength and independence grew over the years as she lived a life of gratitude and service; baking, canning, cooking, sewing and volunteering for MCC for over 60 years. With many amazing memories we are left to carry on her legacy: Daughter Peggy (Al) Hiebert, Rebecca (Graham) Dyck, Melaina and Keiron, Sara (Rick Mussenden), Claire and Gracie, son, Jim (Bev) Martens, Camille Martens, Micah and Anastasia, Rachel (Keith) Wyatt and many nieces, nephews and friends of all ages. A memorial service will be held at Bakerview MB Church, 2285 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers those friends wishing to make memorial contributions in memory of Frieda may do so to the MCC BC. With respect and gratefulness to Dr. Dave Arnold, Heron Grove, and Gateby staff for the warm and loving care extended to mother (and our family) during her last years.
