Dec. 21, 1918 – Jan. 15, 2007
Mom was born in Northern Valley, Alberta into John and Christena Heyd’s family. They homesteaded in Vermillion, Alberta. She had three sister and five brothers. They migrated west and lived in Whonnock where Pa Heyd manned the horses for the Whonnock mill. They then traveled to the Cowichan Valley where Mom was raised in Glenora (Duncan), B.C. Mom attended Brae Road Gospel chapel where she was spiritually nurtured and became a Christian. Mom met William McLaughlin Dawes in the spring of 1940 and was wed October 15, 1940. In 1945 they were commended to the Lord’s work by Duncan chapel and Oaklands chapel in Victoria. The early years were lived in Duncan where Terry was born. Mom and Dad continued their ministry in Port Alberni where Colin was born then to Lake Cowichan. In 1951 they were called to the Lord’s service in the Kootenays, lived in Trail but also served the church in Rossland. Elizabeth, Allan and Dianne were born in Trail. In 1966, Mom and Dad chose to raise Darlene as their own child. Every summer, Mom and Dad gave their heart and soul to children’s camps at “Good Hope”, “Silver Birches”, “Rosebud Lake” and “Pines” Bible camps. Mom was a vital part of the ministry in Trail. She loved serving people meals, teaching Sunday School, girls class and young peoples. Mom had a love for youth and loved to smile and laugh with them. Mom always made room for another at home, at our table and in her heart. She loved the fellowship of games in the evening or a cup of coffee and of course a delectable dessert! In 1981, Mom and Dad retired to Duncan. In 1988, they moved to Abbotsford to be closer to family.
Mom was there for her Lord, for Dad, and for her children Terry, Colin, Elizabeth, Allan, Dianne, Darlene, 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Her smile lives in our memory. Mom’s gift to our family was her contended spirit.
