March 8, 1912 – April 29, 2008
On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, Eugen Geng passed away quietly into the presence of his Saviour, Jesus Christ. He was 96.
Eugen Geng was born in the Ukraine on March 8, 1912, to Andreas and Otilie Geng, and was the oldest of eight children.
In 1938 the family moved to Orloff, where he met Agathe Isaak, whom he married in 1940. Three children were born to them before their lives were turned upside down by the tumult of World War II.
In 1948 the family immigrated to Canada, settling in the Chilliwack area, and two more children were born to them in the years that followed.
Eugen worked faithfully for 25 years at Bowman’s Sawmill and dedicated his spare time to growing raspberries and raising animals on their hobby farms.
During the earlier days of Hockey Night in Canada, he was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and later became an ardent Vancouver Canucks fan. In his retirement he enjoyed beekeeping and fishing. Eugen loved Canada, and often spoke with gratitude of this land of opportunity that enabled him to establish a wonderful life for his family.
He will be remembered as a hard-working man of principle and quiet faith, who was committed to his family, and was fair and worthy of respect.
He leaves behind a family who loved him dearly: his devoted wife of 68 years, Agathe; four children and their spouses—Irene (Vic) Doerksen, Henry (Janet) Geng, Eric (Irene) Geng, Christel (Greg) Wiltshire; ten grandchildren and their spouses—David (Shannon) Doerksen, Mark (Gayle) Doerksen, Lisa (Pat) Jenkins, Jennifer (Troy) Ouellette, Sabrina Geng (fiancé Ben Hall), Heather (Cameron) Boyes, Brian (Jennifer) Geng, Garret Wiltshire, Emerson Wiltshire, Kirsten Wiltshire; and eleven great-grandchildren and their spouses.
He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Edith; his parents; and his brothers Victor and Herbert.
A celebration of Eugen Geng’s life will be held on Monday, May 12, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Greendale First Mennonite Church, 42369 South Sumas Road,
