It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Erna Scheckel at Fenelon Court in Fenelon Falls, Ontario on January 4, 2021.
She will be greatly missed by her two daughters and their husbands: Teresa Scheckel and Cory Harrison of Woodville, Ontario; and Lisa and Ron Gobbels of Plattsville, Ontario. Loved by her granddaughters, Rachel and Laura Gobbels. Erna was so proud of having two daughters, two sons-in-law, and two granddaughters.
Erna was born in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan on June 1, 1936 to Henry and Sara Neudorf, and in 1947 moved to Abbotsford BC with her family.
Survived by her brother Bill and his wife Gladys Neudorf, sister-in-law Sheila Neudorf, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, her brothers, and sisters-in-law Alvin Neudorf, Cornie and Justina Neudorf, Ernie and Selma Neudorf.
Erna was known for her speedy walking, her willingness to help others, her famous cabbage rolls and love of chocolate, her chicken collection, and enjoyment of sharing hockey stories with her cousin Gerald Klassen.
As a family, we have fond memories of doing puzzles and playing board games, croquet and badminton. She was proud of our successes and taught us how to accept others unconditionally. She was a hard worker and volunteered at the MCC Thrift Store in Abbotsford with her dear friends Marijke and Violet. She also cherished the friendship of those in her women's fellowship group at Emmanuel Mennonite Church.
Erna moved to Ontario in 2018. Her last two years were filled with much laughter and gratitude for her time with family. She was lovingly known to her son-in-law, Cory Harrison, as "Big Mama" ... to which she would reply, "I am not Big Mama, I am Little Mama!" She will be greatly missed and remembered always.
A celebration will take place at a later time when we can honour her spirit and a life well lived. Her cremated remains will be laid to rest at Maclure Road Mennonite Cemetery in Abbotsford with her parents.
