It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Emma/Mami/Oma at the age of 97.
She passed away peacefully with family by her side. She is predeceased by Peter, her husband of 50 years, her parents Heinrich and Amalia, sisters Dali, Mai, Lilli and brother Heini. She will be missed by brothers "Schunk" and Tonio in Paraguay and all their families, her daughter Hilda (Gerard), sons Henry (Linda), and Walter (Dawn). She also leaves 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Her parents, from Switzerland and Austria emigrated to Paraguay where Emma was born on the family farm. She was the 4th of 7 children. A rustic, busy, and happy childhood, Emma spoke German at home, Spanish at school, with Paraguayan native Guarani amongst the children.
Orphaned by 17, she moved to Asuncion then on to Buenos Aires, where she met and married Peter Eric Harder. They emigrated to Canada in 1951, where Emma devoted herself to her family, making a home, no matter how often we moved, no matter where, from Vancouver to Kemano, Texada Island and Abbotsford.
On retirement Peter and Emma went back to Paraguay, with frequent trips to visit their children. She taught herself to read and speak English, was an avid walker and lived a long and healthy life.
Auf Wieder Sehn. "Alla bootcha Mum"
Our family would like to thank Bindya and all the staff of the Tabor home, in particular for Emma's loving care during this very difficult time of COVID.
