June 15, 1927 - October 20, 2024
Dr. Edward E. Fast was born June 15, 1927, near Lebret Sask. to Mennonite immigrants from Russia. The family soon moved to Manitoba where his father taught school and farmed. By the age of 14 Ed had lost both parents, requiring him to help out on the farm and delaying his high school graduation from Mennonite Collegiate Institute until age 21. Thereafter he completed pre-med studies at the University of Manitoba, but then opted for dentistry at the University of Toronto. In 1954 he married his sweetheart Helene Schulz of Winnipeg. Following the birth of their first son the family moved to Vancouver where he became known as "Zahnarzt (dentist) Fast" in the German community, practicing dentistry for over 30 years, most notably at Cambie and 41st Ave. During this time, they were blessed with 7 more children. Their retirement years were spent in Abbotsford BC, and most recently at the Menno Terrace East care home. The family is grateful for the excellent care mom and dad both received from the staff there. Ed's entire life was characterized by an unwavering commitment he made at a young age to trust in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. He cherished the spiritual homes he and Helene found in Vancouver MB, Culloden MB and King Rd MB churches. He was active in church council as well as Saturday German language school. He also loved playing chess and Scrabble, enjoyed political discourse and was a big sports fan who loved attending sporting events, especially when his children and grandchildren were involved. On October 20, 2024, while sleeping, he quietly slipped into the presence of his Lord he so longed to see, having been preceded by his wife Helene in 2020. He leaves behind children Ed (Annette), Paul (Ruth), Marie-Louise (Johannes), Leona (Reinhard), Ingrid (Eduard), Charlotte (John), Walter (Anne), Hildegarde (Beatie), 35 grandchildren and 109 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Nov. 2, 2024, at 1:30pm at King Rd. MB Church, 32068 King Rd. Abbotsford. "I (Jesus) am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me will live even though he dies." John 11:25
