DOUGLAS SMITH

February 25, 2003

Douglas Ernest, born April 6, 1928 in Wapella, Saskatchewan, passed away on February 25, 2003 at Abbotsford in his 75th year, surrounded by his family, after a long courageous battle with leukemia.


Doug is survived by his loving family; wife of 48 years, Betty (Mary); daughters, Janette Johnson (Allan), Pat Catlin (Ken), Leigh Fadden (Alan); sons Gerald, Joe (Sandra) and Kevin (Tracey); beloved grandchildren; brother Earl; sisters Shirley and Alfreda and numerous nieces and nephew.


He was predeceased by his father Harvey in 1947, mother Mabel in 1999, brothers Lloyd in 1995 and Bud in 2000.


Doug, along with his family, moved to Mt. Lehman when he was 10 years old and attended school in Matsqui Village. He worked with road construction equipment for Matsqui Municipality for 23 years with a special love for operating bulldozers. At the same time, he maintained the farm. Prior to working for the Municipality, he worked in the logging industry. He resided on the family farm until his death.


Doug will be remembered for his generosity, determination, humour and great story-telling of events that took place during his life.


Viewing at Henderson's Funeral Home, 34527 Marshall Road, on Sunday, March 2 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. and Monday, March 3 from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m., followed by the graveside service to be held at Hazelwood Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow at Matsqui Community Hall.
