March 6, 1924 - March 27, 2020
Doris Elizabeth Hawkes (nee George) passed away peacefully on Friday, March 27th, 2020 in Abbotsford, BC at the age of 96.
Doris was predeceased by her husband of 72 years Robert (Bob) Hawkes. She is survived by her five children, Chris (Sherrie), Craig (Inese), David (Marlene), Susan (Mark), Wendy (Jamie), thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
Doris was born in Toronto on March 6th, 1924 to Sydney and Florence George (Perkins). Doris spent her school years studying ballet and enjoying her summers swimming at their cottage in Riverbend along with her older brothers Fred (Isabelle) and Harold (Muriel). At 19 she volunteered to serve overseas in World War II and upon discovery of her dancing talent, became part of the RCAFW Debs entertainment troupe where they performed and toured throughout England and France during the war and later, Germany and Poland after the war.
While overseas Doris met Bob, who flew with the RCAF bomber command. They married in London on December 29th, 1945 and eventually settled in Vancouver where they had three sons, Chris, Craig and David. In 1961 Bob, Doris and family moved to Maple Ridge to enjoy a country life and expanded their family with daughters Susan and Wendy.
Doris loved to sew and created many beautiful costumes over the years when she was involved with the Maple Ridge Figure Skating Club. Doris loved sandy beaches, particularly Hawaii and would never turn down chocolate or a trip to the mall.
Doris (Gigi, Grandma) loved her family and friends. We will all miss her but cherish all the wonderful times we had together.
Celebration of Life to take place in the summer.
