Donald James Hunter

January 1, 1930 - June 28, 2024

Donald James Hunter passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He was 94 years old. Don was born in Fort MacLeod Alberta, a New Years baby. He was raised in Spring Coulee, Alberta, the oldest of three children. He grew up in the 'dustbowl' prairies, riding his horse to the one-room schoolhouse, working on the family farm, and riding the range tending the Hunter cattle. Don was athletic and excelled in basketball and boxing. He graduated from Mount Royal College in Calgary, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Eileen Whitmore. They spent 59 wonderful years together and enjoyed travelling and hosting their family and friends in their North Vancouver home. Don was Eileen's devoted caregiver for many years after her Parkinson's diagnosis, and until her death in 2010.

Don was the family patriarch, a title and role he loved and took seriously. He became Uncle Don to nieces and nephews, friends and strangers. He was an original employee of the Westcoast Transmission Company, where he retired after 35 years of service. Don was a high achiever, generous, and hospitable. He loved woodwork, golf, and enjoyed the company of his many friends over a meal, a golf game or a round of cards. He coached baseball, was a Scout Leader and a committed Big Brother through the years.

Don is survived by his three children, Dan (Dorothy), Janet (Jan), Gail (John), nine grandchildren, Heather (Tim), Kim (Josh), Mark, Kendra (Jon), Allison (Cam), Stephanie (Landon), Tessa (Dustin), Abbey, Emma, and precious great grandchildren, Henry, Charlie, Hunter, Brynn, Kashton, Willow, Piper, Liev, Declan (and another on the way). The family would like to thank Dr. Manosha, Dr. Dhillon, and the wonderful staff at South Okanagan General Hospital for their support and care. A memorial service will be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 33911 Hazelwood Ave, Abbotsford, BC, July 20th at 2:00 pm, Rev. Thomas Kim officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson's Association of BC would be appreciated.
