October 10, 2021
With much sadness we announce that Bryan Spencer Hambley passed on October 10, 2021 at the age of 88. His much-adored wife Josephine predeceased him on September 30, 2021.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: Nancy, John (Diana), Lisa (Robert) and his much loved granddaughter, Lindsey.
He is survived by his sister Marion Campbell, brother-in-law Jack Clemmens, and sister-in-law Jean Wilcox all of Ontario, as well as many nieces and nephews. Also predeceasing Bryan was: brother Bruce Hambley, sisters-in-law: Betty Meger, Ruth Clemmens and Lil Hambley; and brothers-in-law: Phil Campbell, Ches Wilcox, and Paul Meger.
Dad was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 24, 1933. He graduated from the University of Manitoba (Commerce) in 1954; during the summers he trained in the RCAF-as a cadet in 1952, and becoming a pilot officer in 1953. In 1954 he was stationed in London, England and attended Queen Elizabeth's coronation. Upon graduation he worked for Canadian General Electric as an internal auditor. He met Mom at Camp Borden and wrote to her faithfully during her RN training, attending special events and dances with her. They married in Barrie, Ontario on December 14, 1957.
They moved to Abbotsford in 1961 and Dad displayed his intellectual talents and business acumen to successfully manage/operate Hambley Hatcheries Ltd and Maplewood Poultry. During these years he also served terms as President of the Canadian Hatchery Federation. Taking early retirement, Dad pursued his interest in investments and became a stockbroker; later he worked as an insurance broker.
Although his work was demanding, he spent time teaching us how to skate, ride a bike, throw a baseball and always made time to check in to see how our school work was going or how our day had been. He loved having his family home on Sundays: we attended church, ate his waffles for lunch, played board games and did puzzles. Dad's faith was very important to him; he was a long time member of Trinity Memorial United Church an usher and Board member.
Bryan believed in community service and held a strong interest in education. He was trustee and then Board Chairman for School District #34 from 1968-1982. He helped establish the Ledgeview Golf Club Society; served on the Fraser Valley College Board, Abbotsford Foundation, Abbotsford Community Services, and the Community Health Council. He was an Alderman for Matsqui Council and he volunteered at the local Food Bank.
He played various sports, particularly tennis and golf, throughout his life. He believed in the monarchy, faithfully watching the Queen's message every Christmas. He supported the Vancouver Symphony and was a long time Canucks season ticket holder. Dad was an avid bridge player, fond of strawberries, ginger snap cookies, Mom's clam chowder, and good coffee.
Our Dad was positive, generous, hard working, humble, and enjoyed a good long laugh. Dad, we miss you greatly and give you our biggest hug.
Dad and Mom together created a life full of fun, family, travel, great friends and wonderful memories. We were blessed to have them guide us and will forever love them dearly.
They will rest in peace in Maui. Memorial donations may be made to Abbotsford Foundation-Ledgeview Bursary Fund or to University of the Fraser Valley.
