Known as Art and Opa by many who loved him, Artur Schmidt passed away peacefully at home on May 7, 2024 in Abbotsford, British Columbia at age 85.
Predeceased by wife Irmgard B. Schmidt (nee Kowalski), infant daughter Liana Veronica Schmidt, parents Wilhelm and Olga Schmidt (nee Schadek), and siblings Leokadia Adele Schimansky (nee Schmidt), Arnold, Hermann, Herbert, Siegfried, Adam, Lydia, Helmuth and Ewald Schmidt.
Surviving family includes son David Schmidt, daughter Sonya (Shawn) Wood, and grand-children Alexander (Sarah) and Natasha (Alvin) of Abbotsford, BC; grandson Dylan (Jenna) and great grand-daughter Hannah of Vancouver Island, grandson Daniel of Port Coquitlam, grandson Mitchell of Prince George, as well as many relatives and friends in Canada and Germany.
Artur was born in December 1938 in the village of Antonowka 2, near Ochnowka and Werba, Kreis Wladimir, Wolhynien (now Ukraine). In 1955 he travelled from Germany aboard the ship Columbia, to start a new life in Canada.
In 1958 Artur and Irmgard wed in Toronto, Ontario. They enjoyed almost 60 years together, residing in various locations in Ontario and British Columbia.
In honor of Artur's wishes, there will be no funeral/memorial service. If you would like to honour Artur, we encourage you to privately celebrate his memory and life in your own way.
