Alex Hodgins-Smith

February 23, 1936 – February 9, 2019
It is with profound sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Alex Hodgins-Smith, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and great-grandfather, February 9th, 2019 at the age of 82 years. Alex will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife of 48 years, Marjorie.

He leaves to mourn his sons, Les (Barb) Hodgins, Roger (Kathy) Hodgins, Dale (Kim Hamilton) Hodgins, daughter Colleen (Mike) Garner and brother-in-law Merv Cussack. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Len and Tracy Hodgins, Lindsay and Scott Armstrong, Garrison and Danae Hodgins, Daryl and Rosie Hodgins, Kelly Hodgins, Valerie Hodgins, Marie and Gary Baars, Jillian and Dawson Procee, Emily and Tyler Frose and 10 great-grandchildren. Alex was predeceased by his parents James & Mary Smith and 2 sisters Winnie Fraser and Elma Smith, 2 brothers Jimmy Smith and Fred Smith, 2 brother-in-laws Tom Walker and Sandy Walker. Left to mourn is one brother Ian Smith (Kathleen) and sisters Meg, Violet & Nan and many nieces and nephews all in Scotland.

Born February 23, 1936 in Ellon of Aberdeenshire Scotland, Alex was the 5th of 9 children, with so many mouths to feed, Alex left to join the Gordon Highlander Division of the British Army at the age of 17. He moved to Canada in 1956. In 1964, Alex came to the aid of Marjorie, a young widow with 4 small children and a dairy farm to run out on the Sumas Prairie. He and Marjorie struggled tirelessly to keep the farm in those early days. A friendship formed and they married in 1970.

Alex milked the cows, kept them healthy, raised the cattle corn, grew the grass, baled the hay, fed the cows, 7 days a week with the help of his sons for years and years and years. He modelled to his family a gentle, patient nature, animal care and respect for his animals. Along with his sons they grew the farm to become a successful family farm.

In 1987, supporting Marjorie’s dream, they built and ran the Yellow Barn Country Produce, with their daughter Colleen for 30 years. Alex had a great skill for growing and grew a variety of vegetables and with his son Les, grew the sweet corn the Yellow Barn was famous for.

Alex was an intelligent and kind man of few words. We celebrated Robbie Burn’s birthday every January and he would recite from memory, in Gaelic, the complete Toast to the Haggis. He so enjoyed his Scottish heritage and we enjoyed watching him shine in this.

Alex came into our lives 55 years ago and worked selflessly to preserve this farm life for all of us and the generations to come. It is with great sadness that we say thank you and good bye to this amazing man. A man who modelled a work ethic and stamina that was admirable.

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday March 2nd, 2019 at 2 pm at St. John’s Anglican Church, 46098 Higginson Road, Sardis. A viewing will be held 1:00-1:45 prior to the service in the church. Reverend Allan Carson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Salvation Army or St. John’s Anglican Church would be appreciated. Reception to follow on site. All are welcome.
