Woman treated for smoke inhalation after rescuing animals from Abbotsford barn fire

Chickens, goats and potbellied pigs were rescued from an Abbotsford barn that went up in flames on Friday night.

A woman was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation after saving chickens, goats and potbellied pigs from an Abbotsford barn that went up in flames on Friday night.

Fire crews were called to the blaze – located at 35321 Page Road – at about 6:45 p.m. after a neighbour reported seeing smoke coming from the combination garage/workshop and barn on the property.

When fire crews arrived, they found fire originating from the garage portion.

The owner of the property had rescued several animals from the barn area, and was treated on scene before being take to hospital for further examination.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said 30 firefighters and eight trucks from five fire halls were on the scene, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

The cause is still under investigation, but is believed to be electrical. Damage is estimated at $20,000.
