WestJet has begun daily flights between Abbotsford and Winnipeg.

The daily service, which was announced earlier this year, started on Monday. Between April 30 and Oct. 28, the airline will leave Winnipeg early morning at 7:25 a.m., and depart Abbotsford daily at 1:10 p.m. The move will bring the number of weekly departures from Abbotsford to 60.

In a press release Sunday, the airline also applauded the decision to eliminate YXX’s airport improvement fee, which had previously resulted in a $5 fee for each out-of-province passengers.

“Becoming the first airport in Canada to reduce the airport improvement fee to zero without increasing other fees is a great achievement for YXX,” Mayor Henry Braun said in a press release. “As we continue our work to achieve our strategic goals of a vibrant economy, we are proud to remove barriers in order to facilitate growth and investment at the airport and in the aerospace sector.”

The airport is also in the early stages of planning for a $5 million to $6 million expansion to meet growing demand.
