Here are some of the stories that made The News this week.

  • Abbotsford Middle School’s Art of Rap program is teaching students to express themselves using the beats and rhymes of hip hop.
  • Newly released figures show crime is on the decline in Abbotsford and Mission.

  • We learned this week that a 31-year-old Iraqi man recently crossed into Abbotsford from the US illegally. He identified himself as a refugee and was taken into custody.

  • Imagine a light rail train that takes you from Abbotsford to the heart of Metro Vancouver. Delta mayor Lois Jackson floated the idea at a recent mayors council meeting but there’s nothing to suggest it will happen anytime soon.

  • Abbotsford city council has recently looked at a number of development proposals that could add housing stock to the market. These include a 103-unit purpose-built rental building, a 38-single family home project off Old Clayburn and a 14 home development off Eastview Street.

  • On Friday, a Beechcraft Sierra plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Abbotsford. Pilot Jay Kim and his passenger were on their way to Chilliwack from Surrey when the plane’s engine died. Thankfully, neither was hurt.

  • The former executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association, Tine Stewart, is suing the organization for wrongful dismissal after her employment was terminated earlier this year.

  • And in sports, it was announced this week that Professional Bull Riding is returning to Abbotsford this fall. The competitors will be at the Abbotsford Centre Oct. 14.
