The walls started to go up on the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre this week.

The facility – to include a new pool, ice rink, and community facilities – has been under construction since February and is scheduled to be completed and opened by the summer of next year.

The $35.6-million project, located on Fraser Highway just west of Alder Lanes (the former Aldergrove Elementary site), includes a covered outdoor pool, a larger tidal and play pool, and a new ice arena.

Tilt-up concrete walls for the areana area started to go up Wednesday on the construction site, said Jason Winslade, the general manager of municipal administration.

When finished, the project will also include a sauna, a steamroom, and a wider tidal pool due to some federal grants coming through for the project. Those items were planned for future phases of the project but were moved up to be built in the original construction.

Langley Township council also voted to cover the main pool, though locals lobbied hard almost to the start of construction for a fully enclosed indoor pool.
