Abbotsford Police are still investigating after a car fire in a berry field near the University of the Fraser Valley late Saturday night.

According to Sgt. Judy Bird, the call came in at 11:24 p.m. last night for a car fire on King Road. The car was empty at the time of the blaze and no one was injured, Bird noted.

“It was a 1998 brown Mazda Protege,” Bird said. “We did speak to the registered owner and he saw it earlier that night.”

The owner, who lives in Abbotsford, had left it at their own property on Saturday. Police are still looking into whether the vehicle was stolen and how it ended up in the berry field.

“At this time, it is not considered a crime vehicle,” said Bird.

Abbotsford assistant fire Chief Craig Bird said that a quick response by fire crews prevented the blaze from spreading in a dry berry field.

“There was an 80-foot tree that the fire had candled up,” Bird said. “There was minimal property damage.
