VIDEO: Abbotsford’s Rick Hansen Secondary School celebrates ‘Virtual Vaisakhi’

Production highlights local youth talent in anticipation of the start of annual festival on April 13

Abbotsford’s Rick Hansen Secondary School is celebrating Vaisakhi in a unique way due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The school has released a one-hour video celebrating the annual festival, which officially begins on Tuesday (April 13).

RHSS teacher Jas Gill explained that every year a live show is hosted at the school, and 2021 sees the format move to a virtual celebration.

“It captures the youth from within our local schools and dance academies,” he told The News. “It also has skits, interviews, and dance.”

Gill added that students have also created a video explaining what exactly Vaisakhi is. That video will be posted online on Tuesday.

“We also have managed to buy every person at RHSS free samosas from Moga Sweets as a goodwill gesture on Vaisakhi,” he said. “It is individually wrapped. We also are sending a Vaisakhi goodwill gesture to a local elementary school across town Mountain Elementary and sending their staff free samosas as well.”
