Upwards of a dozen large housing projects are in the pre-building stage across Abbotsford. Some with applications in with the city are under review by staff. Others have been approved in principal and have gone before council, but must still meet certain requirements before a building permit is issued to proceed.
One of the largest project is a 282 residential development set for the current site of the Abbotsford News on Gladys Road, near the intersection with Sumas Way. That project still must go before council. It includes a commercial element on a lot immediately northwest of the intersection of Sumas Way and South Fraser Way. The News, which sold the property in 2016, expects to find office space in the area, Publisher Carly Ferguson said. Elsewhere, there are two apartment buildings proposed for the George Ferguson Way corridor, including a 44-unit five-storey building near the historic downtown. While those two projects have yet to come before council, several others have received tentative or final approval.
They include the third phase of the Central Park Village development on Gladwin, which will see the construction of 142 units in two six-storey buildings, a 60-unit affordable housing project on Old Yale Road, a 103-unit six-storey rental building on Eleanor Avenue near Sumas Way, and a mixed use development on the King Connector that will include 204 rental units.
The Whatcom area has two major townhouse projects, with a combined 274 units, on the way, and a major townhouse project in the Townline Hill area has recently been adjusted.
There has also been applications for several large single-family home developments submitted in recent monrths. They include 161 lots in the Vicarro Ranch area, and 123 lots on Straiton Road, near Clayburn Village. Another 73 house lots on Sumas Mountain Road on McKee peak are also in the works.
