Vandals appear to be targeting the election signs of Abbotsford-Mission Liberal candidate Simon Gibson.

According to information provided by his campaign office, 11 out of 23 signs in Mission and seven of the eight signs in Abbotsford were destroyed by “obvious vandalism,” not damage caused by the wind or other weather issues.

That’s more than half of all of Gibson’s signs

“We’ve been shocked and dismayed by the amount of vandalism of our signs,” said Gibson. “And it’s been wanton destruction too, not just knocking down of signs but actually damaging them to the point that they can’t be reused.”

He said volunteers have been working on replacing the signs, but there were only so many available.

“Some of the signs are surprisingly inaccessible from the road, but that doesn’t seem to bother these individuals who have destruction as their main objective.”

Vandals have also been destroying signs of Liberal candidate Mike DeJong in the Abbotsford-West riding.

“It’s disappointing to me because these signs are a part of democracy and destroying them, in many ways, is undermining our democratic ideals and I find that very disturbing,” said Gibson.
