Abbotsford Police were already on scene when a fire broke out at a home on Sentinel Drive on Sunday afternoon.

“We actually had been called down to Sentinel group home to deal with an unrelated and minor issue involving one of the youth,” explained Const. Ian MacDonald.

Upon arrival, MacDonald said the female youth in question exited her room, followed by billowing smoke

She was taken into custody and the home was evacuated.

Two neighbouring homes were also evacuated by police as a precaution.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue dispatch was called in. The first fire team at the scene reported heavy smoke and flames showing. Trucks from five halls responded. The fire was put out at approximately 3:40 p.m.

“We have contacted Fraser Health, and the mental health component in regard to the female youth,” said MacDonald who said no charges have been filed at this time. However the investigation is ongoing.

He did say the youth is “suspected of starting the fire” but added there is a “whole bunch” of different issues to be considered.
