An emergency response team member arrives at the scene of a police standoff on Bourquin Crescent in Abbotsford on Tuesday afternoon with gear in hand.

When police were able to get into the suite where a 23-year-old distraught man had barricaded himself after firing shots on Tuesday, they found several guns, as well as bullet holes in the walls and ceiling.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said one of the shots had gone into a neighbouring suite that was occupied by two women.

Despite the recipe for tragedy, nobody was injured in the incident.

"It's remarkable," MacDonald said after the man's arrest.

Police were called to the apartment suite in the 33200 block of Bourquin Crescent East just after 11:30 a.m.

MacDonald said two family members who were in the suite with the man reported that he was holed up in a room and had fired some shots.

Police arrived on the scene, and one of the family members was able to escape immediately. The other one was in the suite for the two hours it took for the man to give himself up, but was unharmed.

Meanwhile, MacDonald said police arranged for a transit bus to come to the scene, and they safely evacuated residents of the building.

The area east of Ware Street and from Bourquin Crescent East to South Fraser Way was shut down to traffic and pedestrians. Nearby schools and daycares were locked down.

Multiple police officers, including members of the emergency response team, were on the scene, as were numerous police vehicles, ambulances and a firetruck. The Air One police helicopter circled the scene.

At points during the standoff, the man threw items from the balcony.

It was all over by 1:20 p.m., when the man surrendered to police and was taken into custody.

MacDonald said it is believed the man was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
