Firefighters extinguished a blaze at the Chances Boardwalk Mission building on Horne Street late Friday afternoon.

Smoke was visible from one of the towers at the front of the facility as the fire trucks rolled up. Firefighters had to pull away some of the exterior building materials to get at the flame.

The building was evacuated, but many patrons stayed behind to watch Mission Fire/Rescue's efforts.

There was a similar fire at Chances in 2008, and according to Asst. Chief Blaine Odenbach, this one was also electrical in nature.

The wires feeding power to the neon lights were determined by an electrical inspector to be the fire's origin, he said.

Damage was contained to the tower and fire crews were on scene for approximately three hours.

Chances is located near the corner of the Murray Street overpass and Horne Street in southern Mission.
