UPDATED: Driver swerves to miss ducks, rolls car into ditch

Highway 1 eastbound was closed between Clearbrook and McCallum for about three hours on Thursday night.

A single vehicle accident Thursday night forced the closure of a small section of Highway 1.

The eastbound portion of the freeway, between the Clearbrook and McCallum Road exits was closed for about three hours after a driver swerved to avoid a family of ducks crossing the road.

The vehicle ended up in the ditch.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service responded at approximately 7:45 Thursday night.

Lt. Ted Main told The News they were called out for a "rollover crash" with the driver trapped.

Crews arrived on scene, stabilized the driver and used the jaws of life to remove the roof from the vehicle.

Once out of the vehicle, the driver was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Cpl. Rob McDonald of Lower Mainland Traffic Services (RCMP) said the man is doing well and has no major injuries.

"The only fatality was a duck," said McDonald.
