Chilliwack RCMP have released a sketch of a man they suspect attempted to lure a nine-year-old girl near F.G. Leary Fine Arts school on June 2.
The girl was approached between 2:15 and 3 p.m. on First Avenue and McNaught Road.
Police say the male persistently asked the child to go with him and offered her candy in an effort to persuade her.
The child rode away on her bike and no further contact was made.
“This little girl stood her ground and made it known to this person that she was not going to go with him,” said Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. “We are very interested in speaking to the male who approached the girl and discussing with him his intentions.”
The male is described as having a full beard down to his neck with sideburns and greying hair. He was wearing a red sweater with a white shirt underneath and brown shoes. Police believe the male was driving an older model red van similar to a Dodge Caravan.
Police would like to encourage parents and teachers to discuss the importance of “stranger danger" with their children and students.
Wolbeck said police have had no similar reports over the last week, but she still encourages parents to talk to their children.
"These are conversations that no parents want to have, but it is important to be candid and honest with them about the possible dangers that exist,” Wolbeck said.
