It has been determined that the suspicious container found in the Abbotsford Regional Hospital was not an explosive device.

Fire rescue services and the police were on scene yesterday afternoon after a report was filed that a suspicious container has been found.

The hazardous material unit and the bomb squad were called in.

“Right now it’s described as an aerosol can with a glove on it,” Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said on Thursday afternoon.

He said that type of can has been used as “devices that will cause an explosion.”

“It could be a prank,” said Helmer, but the bomb squad was called in to assess the situation.

A 100-metre radius was secured, forcing the evacuation of some offices in the hospital. However, the hospital did not have to be evacuated.

“We have to take this seriously, until we prove otherwise.”

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the department is reviewing the hospital’s video tapes to see if the person who placed the container there can be identified.
