More than a dozen people were displaced after an early morning apartment fire Tuesday.

More than a dozen residents were forced out of an Abbotsford apartment building and one pet died in an early-morning fire Tuesday.

Flames broke out in a single unit around 2:15 a.m. in a two-storey apartment complex near the intersection of Imperial Street and Peardonville Road. Responding crews from Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) were able to keep it from spreading and extinguished the flames within minutes of arriving on scene, assistant fire chief Ron Hull said.

Nevertheless, adjacent suites sustained some water damage and almost 20 people were forced out of their homes.

The residents of the unit where the fire originated were not home at the time. Fire crews were able to locate the family pets and confirmed that one did not survive the blaze.

The local Sikh temple provided the building's displaced occupants with shelter and refreshments until the Abbotsford Emergency Social Service team arrived and took over short-term care.

In total, 18 tenants are currently being provided temporary housing and assistance until they can return to their homes.

A cause of the fire is not yet known.

Eight AFRS units and approximately 25 firefighters attended the incident. Abbotsford Police, BC Hydro, Fortis BC, and BC Ambulance were also on the scene.
