Crash sceneOne person is dead and another has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a single-vehicle crash in Abbotsford early Sunday morning.

Police say speed and alcohol appear to have been factors in the crash, which involved four people in their early 20s.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., a 1997 Chevy Malibu was westbound on Vye Road when the Malibu struck a concrete barricade, then a hydro pole, and flipped onto its roof.

A young man in a rear seat was pronounced dead on the scene.

A woman who had been in a rear seat was on the road when emergency responders arrived, and Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said it is not clear whether she was ejected from the car or crawled out of the wreck. She was airlifted to a Vancouver-area hospital with serious injuries.

The pair in the front of the car suffered minor injuries.

"Tragedies are always amplified when you're dealing with alcohol and speed," said MacDonald, noting that the crash was probably preventable.

Vye Road was to be closed until approximately noon on Sunday, west of Sumas Way to Riverside Drive, as police investigate the scene of the crash.
