A young child struck by a vehicle is loaded into an air ambulance for transport to a Vancouver trauma centre this evening.

A five-year-old girl remains in critical condition in hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday night in Abbotsford.

The collision took place in a laneway near the 31500 block of Blueridge Drive just before 6 p.m. Initial reports indicate that the child ran out of a gate into an alley and was struck by a westbound Toyota Corolla.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the 42-year-old female driver and her passenger remained on scene.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and BC Ambulance personnel provided medical treatment for the girl, who suffered serious injuries, and an air ambulance was called to the scene to transport her to hospital.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) patrol division officers and collision reconstructionists are continuing to investigate the incident.

"The APD offers our thoughts and prayers to the child and her family," MacDonald said.
