A three-car crash on Highway 1 in Abbotsford resulted in two people being airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster with serious injuries early Sunday morning.
Fire, police and ambulance personnel were dispatched at about 2:30 a.m. to the collision which occurred in the eastbound lanes of the freeway just west of the Mt. Lehman Road interchange.
It was initially believed that four cars were involved in the crash, but police later confirmed there were three vehicles.
Cpl. Holly Marks said it is believed that a BMW rear-ended an Acura, causing the BMW to roll into the ditch on the south side of the road.
Marks said the Acura then spun and came to a rest sideways in the fast lane of the freeway. The driver got out of his car to check on the damage, and it was then T-boned by a third vehicle – a Nissan Maxima.
The lone male occupants of the BMW and the Acura were transported to hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The two occupants of the Maxima – a man and woman in their late 20s – were transported by air ambulance to Royal Columbia Hospital in New Westminster.
Marks said the cause of the first collision is not yet known. Alcohol is not believed to be involved, but the speed of the Nissan could be a factor, she said.
