Towne Cinema Centre in Abbotsford will close next month.

A theatre with a history spanning 40 years in this community is set to close down next month.

Towne Cinema Centre will be closed by the owner, Landmark Cinemas Canada, effective Feb. 7. The theatre is located near McCallum and King roads.

Brian McIntosh, executive chairman of Landmark Cinemas Canada said, "We have put our very best efforts into operating our theatre in Abbotsford for many years now; however, due to the new movie market landscape that currently exists in Abbotsford, it is no longer a sustainable business option for our company."

“We have enjoyed our connection to the local Abbotsford community very much. It goes without saying that a decision such as this is a challenging one to make. We are indeed sad to say goodbye," said McIntosh, thanking staff, customers and business supporters in the community.

The final day of business will Saturday, Feb. 7 at the end of the operating day. Guests with any questions regarding vouchers and gifts cards should email guestservices@landmarkcinemas.com.

One of Abbotsford's first buildings, the Abbotsford Theatre on Essendene Avenue, was torn down in 1965.
