Tickets issued for child carseat violations

Some kids were found sitting on the lap of a parent or grandparent, say Abbotsford Police.

Abbotsford Police issued 112 violation tickets last month for drivers who were improperly transporting children in vehicles.

Const. Ian MacDonald said police, in partnership with Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, held four days of carseat checks and enforcement in May.

Tickets were issued for things such as improperly secured or outdated carseats or for kids not being in a child-safety seat. MacDonald said, in some situations, kids were sitting on the lap of a parent or grandparent.

He said the enforcement blitz was initiated by a recent collision in which a child broke his leg because his carseat was not secured in the vehicle.

MacDonald said the idea of the blitzes was also to educate people about proper carseat installation.
