Thieves target valuables left in cars at parks

Abbotsford Police say the culprits are watching for people who are concealing items in their vehicles.

Although thefts from vehicles are down so far this year compared to 2012, the Abbotsford Police Department is warning the public about some recent incidents at public parks.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the thefts are occurring after people who are heading out for walks stash their valuables in their vehicles.

MacDonald said it appears that certain individuals are watching for such activity and then break into the vehicles to steal the concealed items.

The stolen goods have included purses and electronics.

MacDonald said people have the right idea in trying to hide their valuables – for example, under the seat – but they're better off taking the items with them or leaving them at home.

Areas that have been hit include Willband Creek and Aldergrove Lake Regional Park.

Anyone with information or wants to report such a crime is asked to call the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.
