A 17-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital with a serious head injury after an accident at the McMillan Skatepark in Abbotsford on Wednesday.

BC Ambulance, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and the Abbotsford Police Department responded to the incident at about 5 p.m.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the boy was riding a BMX bike in the park when he attempted a jump but went over the handlebars and landed on the ground.

MacDonald said the teen was not wearing a helmet at the time. He was transported by air ambulance in serious condition to a Lower Mainland trauma centre.

The skate park is located at the corner of Old Yale and McMillan roads in east Abbotsford, near Yale Secondary and Abbotsford Recreation Centre.
