An inspection of 53 taxis from four different Abbotsford companies resulted in one-quarter of them being taken off the road due to mechanical safety issues.
The random inspection was carried out last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (May 5 to 8) by the Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD) traffic section in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement.
A total of 13 vehicles were taken out of service, while 10 were given compliance orders for minor violations.
Thirty taxis out of the 53 inspected were allowed to remain on the road.
The repairs required were related to issues such as brakes, steering, ball joints, axles and master control arms.
The inspections are done to ensure that passengers are safe and the owners are doing proper maintenance on their vehicles between inspections.
“Road safety is one of the APD’s top priorities this year. With initiatives and partnerships such as this, we are able to ensure that the commercial operators operating within our city are also making road safety their top priority,” said Const. Paul Walker.
