Abbotsford Police arrested a car thief on Sunday just eight minutes after he allegedly stole a vehicle in the 33000 block of McCallum Place.
A woman reported at 10:02 a.m. that her 1996 Toyota had been stolen from her driveway.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the theft was then broadcast over the police radio communication system to officers throughout the city.
Two plainclothes officers were conducting road safety enforcement at the intersection of McCallum and Marshall roads when the suspect vehicle stopped at a red light at that location.
The officer identified themselves and ordered the suspect from the car. The man got out of the vehicle and began to move onto the ground as instructed, but he then sprinted west on Marshall Road.
He was quickly caught by officers, who placed him in handcuffs at 10:10 a.m.
The 36-year-old man from Mission, who is well-known for property offences throughout the Fraser Valley, is facing charges for theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of stolen property, possession of break-in instruments and obstructing a police officer.
He cannot be named until charges are formally laid.
