Stretch of Downes Road closed due to weather-related damage

Detour in place between Ross and Bradner roads after portion of road collapses because of freezing and thawing

The past month and a half of below-average temperatures is to blame for the closure of Downes Road in rural Abbotsford this week.

Crews are working Monday and Tuesday to shore up a portion of the road that collapsed between Ross and Bradner roads.

Traffic is being redirected away from the area, with re-opening expected later this week.

Repeated freezing and thawing can cause a road to swell and buckle due to changing densities and prompted the rapid deterioration.
