An Abbotsford man gives himself up peacefully after a six hour standoff on Monday morning.

Abbotsford police ended a six-hour standoff with a resident in the 33700-block of McDougall Avenue Monday morning after he had barricaded himself in his home.

A neighbour called police to report the man throwing items out the windows of his home and refused to speak to officers when they arrived, said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

"He wouldn't respond to our attempts to contact and because we didn't know what he had in the house with him and he appeared to be both belligerent and barricaded," he said.

The Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team was called in and the man surrendered after six hours of negotiations and was taken for medical assessment.

Although MacDonald would not identify the man, he said he's been known to police for a history of medical calls due to mental illness.
