Shots rang out in Abbotsford last night in two separate incidents, and police are trying to determine whether they are linked.
The first incident took place at about 9:40 p.m. Abbotsford Police Const. Paul Walker said officers who were in the area of Marshall and McCallum roads for another matter heard the shots and began heading to the general area.
Meanwhile, several 911 calls came in from residents in the vicinity of Salton Road and Fern Street – located in central Abbotsford just south of Marshall Road between McCallum and McKenzie.
Walker said it appears that multiple shots were exchanged between two cars.
Officers who arrived on the scene found shell casings on the road, but no evidence of vehicles or homes in the area being struck.
Local hospitals were contacted to determine whether anyone had arrive requiring medical assistance, but Walker said no victims were located.
He said investigators are still working to gather further information, including descriptions of the cars involved.
The second shooting was reported at 12:13 a.m. in the 31500 block of Ridgeview Drive in west Abbotsford.
Residents reported hearing multiple gunshots and when police arrived, they discovered that a home on the street had been struck by bullets.
Walker said was nobody was in the home at the time.
He said investigators have not yet determined whether the two shootings are linked, or whether either, or both, are connected to the Townline Hill conflict.
The conflict involves two groups of young men battling for drug turf in west Abbotsford, and has resulted in several drive-by shootings and two murders – that of 18-year-old Harwin Baringh in October 2014 and 74-year-old Ping Shun Ao, who was struck by a stray bullet intended for his neighbour on Sept. 2, 2015.
Ao lived on Promontory Court near Ridgeview Drive.
Walker said the Abbotsford Police Department “is extremely concerned about potential escalating tensions and the threats to public safety” following these incidents.
Anyone with information about either of the incidents last night is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225, text abbypd (222973) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-880-222-8477.
