Purse-snatcher attacks senior in Abbotsford

An 85-year-old woman was robbed after withdrawing cash at a bank on South Fraser Way

An 85-year-old woman who had just withdrawn money from a bank was pushed and then robbed of her purse on Sunday afternoon in Abbotsford.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the woman entered the TD Canada Trust in the 32800 block of South Fraser Way at about 12:45 p.m. After making a withdrawal, she drove a short distance and parked on Eagle Street.

A man rapidly approached her as she was getting out of her car, grabbed her purse, pushed her and ran away.

MacDonald said it's possible that the man had watched the woman at the bank and then followed her.

Residents in a nearby apartment complex heard screams for help, attended to the woman and called police.

Patrol officers and a K9 unit searched the area, but a suspect was not located. MacDonald said at least one witness saw a person matching the culprit's description heading toward the area of Mill Lake and the Bourquin bus exchange.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, 18 to 20 years old, clean-shaven and 5' 8". He was wearing a black hoodie and possibly a dark baseball cap.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
