Police seize firearms from rural Maple Ridge property

Police tactical team called, citizens tried to stop suspects from fleeing

A police incident in Maple Ridge on Friday, Nov. 8 resulted in the seizure of firearms after the search of a rural property, the Ridge Meadows RCMP reports.

At 1:05 p.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious occurrence in the 25700 block of 98 Avenue in Maple Ridge. The response included an armoured vehicle and officers dressed in camouflage and tactical gear, as the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team was at the scene. They were joined by the local detachment's Street Enforcement Unit, Investigative Support Team, Crime Reduction Unit and Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team at the scene.

An eyewitness told The News that tools and other items, including electrical transformers, have been stolen from mills in eastern Maple Ridge. An item or items had allegedly been electronically tracked to a property in the area.

Some area residents used their vehicles to block the escape of suspects until police could arrive at the scene, the witness said. He wished to remain anonymous.

Police closed a portion of 98th Avenue during the incident, and told area resident to shelter in place.

RCMP obtained a search warrant, and seized the weapons. Police did not say whether there had been arrests at the scene.

"This is an active and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time," said a statement from Ridge Meadows RCMP.
