A traffic stop by Abbotsford Police officers on Friday night resulted in the seizure of $250,000 cash in U.S. currency and a 9mm handgun with a fully loaded magazine.

The incident began at about 7 p.m., when a bike squad officer saw a white mini van travelling slowly along the Canada-U.S. border in the Sumas Prairie area of Abbotsford. The officer noticed several people in the van, including two men wearing camouflaged clothing.

Officers, including patrol division members, then stopped the vehicle at Vye and Whatcom roads, and discovered that there were two Canadian and two Mexican citizens inside the van.

Also found were the handgun, the loaded magazine, $250,000 in U.S. currency and a substantial amount of Canadian funds.

The Mexican nationals will be held by the immigration department and for possible further criminal investigation. The Canadian pair were released, with future charges being considered.
