Pedestrian struck in crosswalk

The 64-year-old man broke his leg after being hit by a car at Hillcrest Avenue and Parkview Road in Abbotsford.

A 64-year-old man suffered a broken leg and a suspected head injury after he was struck by a car while walking in a marked crosswalk on Monday afternoon in Abbotsford.

The collision occurred at Hillcrest Avenue and Parkview Road at about 2:30 p.m.

Abbosford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the man was heading north in the crosswalk when he was struck by a westbound Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 73-year-old woman.

The victim was conscious and communicating with medical personnel on the scene, and was taken to hospital for treatment.

MacDonald is urging drivers to use extra caution during this season's dark and rainy conditions, particularly while making left turns.

In the last two weeks, there have been 15 collisions involving left-hand turns, and three have involved pedestrians, he said.

MacDonald said accidents occur more frequently during left turns because the drivers' views can be obscured by oncoming traffic or drivers turn on a yellow light before oncoming traffic has stopped.

Pedestrians are vulnerable during these turns because motorists are paying more attention to other vehicles than they are to people crossing the road, he added.
