Abbotsford Police, Fire Rescue Service and ambulance crews were called to a report of a suspected pipe bomb at about 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the 2300 block of McCallum Road.

When they arrived, they found a backpack with several sticks of what appeared to be explosives. The explosive devices unit determined the items were parachute flares.

It is not known how or why the items were placed there.

Parachute flares provide a white illuminating flare and are used in distress situations, such as in search and rescue operations or to alert oncoming vessels of a boat's position.
